21 Findings About
Modern Sporting Rifle Owners

NSSF's complete survey and a description of the methodology used are available online in PDF format.

NSSF SURVEY SHOWS OWNERS ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THEIR AR-STYLE FIREARMS . . . Owners of modern sporting rifles (MSR) -- those rifles based on the AR platform -- are among the most passionate gun owners. Most shoot their rifles often and wish they had time to shoot them even more. Most use them for target shooting. Most own multiple modern sporting rifles. Most enjoy accessorizing them. Given these and other insights into ownership, it's no wonder MSRs were among the hottest sellers during the firearms sales boom from late 2008 through early 2010. With so many MSRs purchased during that period, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry, wanted to learn more about owners' use and attitudes related to these firearms. A survey conducted in 2010 on behalf of NSSF by Sports Marketing Surveys has been compiled into the NSSF Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) Comprehensive Consumer Report. Included in the survey findings are these 21 fascinating facts about owners of modern sporting rifles who responded to the survey. Read more.

  • EYE-OPENER: WHAT DOES 'AR' STAND FOR IN AR-15-STYLE RIFLE? . . . More than half of people who took a poll last week at nssf.org incorrectly answered "assault rifle" and "automatic rifle" when asked the question, "What does 'AR' stand for in 'AR-15-style rifle?'" Of the 820 responses to the question, 24 percent said "assault rifle," 33 percent said "automatic rifle" and 43 percent answered correctly with "ArmaLite" rifle. A pat on the back to everyone who answered correctly. This is an important fact to know as the anti-gun crowd for years has pushed the terms "assault weapon" and "assault rifle" in reference to semi-automatic AR-15-style rifles. These inaccuracies continue to be used in the media and even within the sporting community. Get more facts at nssf.org/MSR and spread the word.

During the period of Jan. 1 through March 31, imports were $224.4 million, down from $276.6 million in the same period of 2010. Individually, the muzzleloader category showed a 54.7 percent increase from $2.6 million to $4 million while the shotgun category posted a 10.1 percent increase from $31.7 million to $34.9 million, and the rifle category was up 5.3 percent from $26.2 million to $27.6 million. • CONSERVATION GROUPS JOIN NSSF IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION TO PROTECT TRADITIONAL AMMUNITION . . . Last week, 35 members of the American Wildlife Conservation Partners (AWCP), a coalition of the nation's leading conservation groups, joined the NSSF lead in encouraging federal lawmakers to become co-sponsors of the Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Sports Protection Act, legislation that will clarify that Congress has not given the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) authority to regulate ammunition and its components under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Currently, anti-hunting groups are trying to force the EPA to ban all traditional ammunition under TSCA. Banning traditional ammunition will drive hunters out of the woods and target shooters off the firing line by causing the price of ammunition to soar. Read more.

  • COMMONSENSE AND DUE PROCESS PREVAIL OVER ANTI-GUN 'TERROR' LEGISLATION . . . In a party-line vote (21-11), the House Judiciary Committee killed an amendment from Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) that would have blocked firearm purchases by those on the FBI's terrorist watch list. If passed, this amendment would have given the attorney general unfettered discretionary power to deny firearm sales to American citizens on the terrorist watch list, thereby denying their constitutionally protected right to bear arms, without due process. • NEVADA LONG-GUN BILL BECOMES LAW . . . On Friday, Assembly Bill 217, which will allow residents of noncontiguous states to purchase long guns in Nevada, was signed into law by Gov. Brian Sandoval. This legislation is a long-awaited change to state law that will move Nevada into compliance with federal law allowing for the interstate sales of long guns by federally licensed dealers. NSSF thanks all sportsmen, firearms owners and retailers for supporting AB 217.

  • NEW HAMPSHIRE BECOMES 32ND STATE TO ENACT FAMILIES AFIELD LAW . . . New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch has signed into law Families Afield-related legislation (HB 206) that will allow the Fish and Game Department to issue an apprentice hunting license. The bill was originally introduced by State Rep. Dennis Reed (R-NH-Merrimack) to allow newcomers an opportunity to go afield alongside an experienced hunter. The bill will take effect on Jan. 1, 2012. Learn more about Families Afield.

  • LAWSUIT FILED OVER INTERSTATE HANDGUN BAN . . . "Americans don't check their constitutional rights at the state line," said attorney Alan Gura, who is representing The Second Amendment Foundation in its suit filed last week in U.S. District Court in Virginia. The suit challenges the constitutionality of federal and Virginia provisions barring handgun sales to nonresidents such as Michelle Lane, who lives in the District of Columbia and cannot legally purchase handguns because there are no retail firearms dealers in the city. The Supreme Court's 2008 Heller ruling struck down the district's handgun ban, reaffirming that individuals have a constitutional right to possess handguns. Read more.

  • DEMOCRATS DEFEND 'TOP GUN' TITLE AT CONGRESSIONAL SHOOT-OUT . . . The Democratic team of marksmen outdueled their Republican counterparts at the recent Congressional Shoot-Out held at the Prince George's County Trap and Skeet Center in Glenn Dale, Md. A near-record turnout of Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus (CSC) members, both Democrats and Republicans, put partisan bickering aside to enjoy a friendly competition shooting rounds of trap, skeet and sporting clays. Read a complete recap of the event.
