$100,000 in Grants for Boy Scouts Councils

FUNDS WILL HELP STENGTHEN SHOOTING SPORTS ACTIVITIES . . . Boy Scouts and their troop leaders, who are known for being resourceful, will easily recognize the great opportunity provided by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and its new $100,000 challenge grant that encourages shooting sports programs at local Boy Scouts of America Councils. The challenge grants by NSSF are available to qualifying BSA Councils that plan to strengthen and increase their activities in the shooting sports. Such programs teach Scouts marksmanship skills, firearm and range safety, teamwork and fundraising. Read NSSF's complete news release.

According to the Department of the Treasury's most recent Firearms and Ammunition Excise Tax (FAET) Collection Report, firearm and ammunition manufacturers reported excise tax obligations to be $95.3 million in the fourth calendar quarter of 2010, up 3.9 percent compared to the same period in 2009. • APRIL 2011 NSSF-ADJUSTED NICS BACKGROUND CHECKS UP 15.2 PERCENT . . . The April 2011 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 843,484 is an increase of 15.2 percent over the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 731,955 in April 2010. For comparison, the unadjusted April 2011 NICS figure of 1,339,673 is an increase of 9.2 percent over the unadjusted NICS figure of 1,226,760 in April 2010. This marks the eleventh straight month-over-month increase in NSSF-adjusted NICS figures. The adjusted NICS data was derived by NSSF by subtracting out all NICS purpose code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky, Iowa and Utah for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provides a more accurate picture of current market conditions. Questions concerning NSSF-adjusted NICS data should be directed to NSSF research at 203-426-1320 or research@nssf.org. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions of firearms sales and transfers on new and used handguns and long guns. For additional information on NICS or to view a complete set of the current monthly reports, please visit the NICS website. NSSF members may access historical monthly NICS reports by logging in to the members section of nssf.org.

  • RUGER SALES UP 10.5 PERCENT IN FIRST QUARTER . . . Sturm, Ruger & Co. (NYSE:RGR) reported that first quarter sales increased 10.5 percent compared to the same period last year. Said Ruger CEO Michael Fifer, "The estimated sell-through of the company's products from distributors to retailers in the first quarter of 2011 increased by approximately 12 percent from the first quarter of 2010 and 21 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010." Company sales and earnings beat Wall Street estimates for the quarter.

  • CABELA'S SEES GROWTH IN FIREARM SALES, REPORTS 1Q RESULTS . . . Outdoor retailer Cabela's (NYSE:CAB) reported that first quarter comparable-store sales jumped 8.9 percent compared the same period last year. "We realized gains in 12 of 13 product categories during the quarter, with the strongest growth coming from firearms, women's and children's, and hunting apparel," CEO Tommy Millner said during the company's earnings call.

  • OLIN REPORTS FIRST QUARTER WINCHESTER RESULTS . . . Olin Corp. (NYSE:OLN), makers of Winchester ammunition, reported that first quarter Winchester division sales were $136.6 million, up from $131.4 million in the first quarter of 2010. The company reported that segment income declined 35 percent in the quarter, reflecting the impact of higher commodity metals and other material costs, higher manufacturing costs and costs associated with the relocation of its centerfire operations to Mississippi.

  • ANOTHER FRIVOLOUS LAWSUIT DISMISSED . . . Last week, a New York State judge dismissed Williams v. Beemiller -- a nearly 6-year-long lawsuit brought by the Brady Center against the maker, distributor and retailer of a firearm used in a 2003 gang-related shooting -- on the grounds that the case was precluded from continuing based on the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. This is yet another case in the long line of frivolous and baseless lawsuits that sought to hold law-abiding, federally licensed manufacturers and sellers of firearms responsible for the crimes of others. Its dismissal is also yet another defeat in a series of stinging setbacks to the Brady Center and its failed anti-gun campaign to destroy the individual right of Americans to keep and bear arms -- a fundamental right the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly declared is protected by the Second Amendment. Representing Beemiller was the Renzulli Law Firm, for MKS Supply the law firm of Pisciotti, Malsch & Buckley, and for firearm retailer Charles Brown Attorney Scott L. Braum.

  • BOSTON MAYOR SHOWS HIS TRUE COLORS . . . In a move demonstrating his true motivations, anti-gun Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, a longtime gun-control supporter and co-founder of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) coalition, took aim at Wal-Mart for bringing back long guns to many of its U.S. stores. Read more in the NSSF Blog.

  • FOR ANTI-GUN GROUPS, IT'S DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN . . . The "Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence" (Ed Fund) released a "report" entitled "Buying Power" that claims to detail "an exciting new strategy to reform the gun industry." Unfortunately for members of the gun-ban lobby, this strategy is neither new nor legal. Read more in the NSSF Blog.

  • BOLTON: GUN CONTROL TOP GOAL OF OBAMA SECOND TERM . . . Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton suggested last Friday that President Obama is laying the foundation for an ambitious gun-control agenda if he wins a second term, Politico reports. "We can understand that, as he likes to say, he's playing the long game, and that 'leading from behind' means waiting until he's elected to a second term when he faces no further political constraints and his true agenda can come to the floor," Bolton said. "And I believe right at the top of it is [to] increase gun control at the federal level and at the international level."

  • ARIZONA GOVERNOR MAKES COLT REVOLVER OFFICIAL STATE GUN . . . Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Thursday signed a bill into law that makes the Colt Single Action Army Revolver the state's firearm, making Arizona only the second in the nation to have such a designation, Reuters reports.
