States Get Needed Boost for Hunting Projects

NSSF GRANTS AIM TO EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES . . . Nine state wildlife agencies and one regional organization have been awarded $480,552 in grants by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to fund programs that will work to expand hunting opportunities for all ages. Since NSSF began the Hunting Heritage Partnership grant program nine years ago, more than $4.3 million has been provided via 109 grants to 38 state agencies and one regional agency covering all Western states. "These grants support sorely needed programs that might never have gotten off the ground because agencies are so strapped for funding," said Chris Dolnack, NSSF senior vice president and chief marketing officer. Notable among this year's awards are Kentucky earning its first grant and Florida receiving funding for two projects. Three new grants will have an effect on multiple states. The Western Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies received funding for a programs-evaluation project that will benefit all states in its region. Two proposals -- Virginia's and Georgia's -- will focus on research related to apprentice hunters that will benefit five Southeastern states. "We encouraged submission of these broader plans to encourage states to work together on recruitment-and-retention issues they are all dealing with," said Melissa Schilling, NSSF's recruitment and retention manager. "We have high hopes for this approach." Read more and see a list of what projects will receive funding this year.

News of Note

  • WHAT'S SELLING WHERE? . . . In this month's "What's Selling Where?" section, SHOT Business magazine talked to firearms retailers about what products caught their eye at the 2011 SHOT Show. See what retailers from around the country had to say.

  • CROSMAN ACQUIRED BY PRIVATE EQUITY FIRM . . . East Bloomfield, N.Y.-based airgun manufacturer Crosman Corp. has a new owner. Wellspring Capital Management has purchased a majority stake in the company from Pamlico Capital, which had been a partner with Crosman since 2007. Crosman's management team, led by CEO Ken D'Arcy, will retain a significant ownership position in the company and continue to lead its growth in partnership with Wellspring, the firm said. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

  • NEW SHOOTING RANGES IN THE NEWS . . . A new shooting complex is set to open at Nebraska's Platte River State Park, a project state officials hope will help recruit new hunters and shooters in the area, the Journal Star reports. Also, in central Pennsylvania, a new facility is hoping to put Olympic-style shotgun sports on the map in the region, reports The Patriot-News. The first phase of the Keystone Shooting Park will open this Sunday in Northumberland County, Pa.

  • ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE SELECTS SERVICE AWARD NOMINEES . . . The Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence has announced the final nominees in its 2011 service award categories. The Academy, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, recognizes excellence in design, innovation and service to the industry. The 500-member voting Academy includes manufacturers, distributors, executives, storefront dealers and outdoor writers. The 2011 award recipients will be announced in conjunction with the Shooting Industry Masters on July 22 in Bowling Green, Ky.

  • $50,000 CHALLENGE GRANT TO TREAD LIGHTLY! . . . NSSF has awarded a $50,000 challenge grant to help fund the educational and outreach campaign created by the nonprofit Tread Lightly! called "Respected Access is Open Access." The grant will help fund production costs of up to 250 information kiosks for the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and state agencies designed to encourage responsible behavior on public lands. "Careless behavior by even a few hunters or target shooters is damaging to the image of all," said Chris Dolnack, NSSF's senior vice president and chief marketing officer. "We encourage others to take up the challenge and help fund this education initiative."

Government Relations

  • NSSF RESPONDS TO MEXICO'S THREATS OF LITIGATION . . . A Mexican official has confirmed that President Felipe Calderon's government has hired U.S. trial lawyers to investigate possible litigation against U.S. gun manufacturers and firearms retailers, seeking to hold these lawful companies responsible for the criminal misuse of firearms in Mexico. Though the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, signed into law in 2005 by then President George W. Bush, prevents such frivolous lawsuits, the mere threat demands a response. Read NSSF's statement.

  • SUPPORT OREGON LEGISLATION TO HELP RETAILERS AND FIREARM OWNERS . . . NSSF is urging all retailers and firearm owners to support HB 2791, which would allow Oregon retailers to use the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) -- instead of the Oregon State Police -- to conduct federally mandated background checks. Oregon would join 34 other states that successfully use NICS. This commonsense bill could save Oregon and the state police millions of dollars that could be used on far better resources in this difficult budget environment. Please urge representatives to vote "yes" on HB 2791.

NSSF History Snapshot

Throughout its 50th anniversary year, NSSF each week will be spotlighting various moments from the Foundation's history.

  • PROMOTION . . . In 1963, the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute voted to merge its promotional branch -- the Sportsman's Service Bureau -- with NSSF. This helped establish NSSF as the lead promotional group for the industry. Learn more at nssf.org/50.
