Industry, Lawmakers Meet in D.C.

CONGRESSIONAL FLY-IN RECAP . . . The National Shooting Sports Foundation hosted its annual Congressional "Fly-In" for executives from industry companies last week. The nearly 40-member delegation heard from congressional leaders and also held private meetings with more than 30 legislators, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) and senior staff from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's office. During the fly-in, many issues affecting industry were discussed, including safeguarding the rights of sportsmen to continue to use traditional ammunition, which anti-hunting groups are trying to ban; improving the ability of U.S. manufacturers and distributors to compete in an increasingly global economy while maintaining national security by modernizing the U.S. export control system that currently impedes business; and seeking a comprehensive federal study of firearms microstamping -- a flawed and unreliable concept being promoted by gun-control groups. Participants also sought additional funding for the NSSF's ongoing Don't Lie for the Other Guy dealer and consumer education program. "This was a tremendous opportunity for industry leaders to express their concerns and extend their thanks to lawmakers," said NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti. "Demonstrating a deft command of the issues, participants clearly identified those actions that needed to happen in order to keep America's firearms and ammunition industry financially sound in an ever-changing global marketplace." The 2012 NSSF Congressional Fly-In has been scheduled for April 18-20.

  • 1099 REPEAL LEGISLATION MOVES TO PRESIDENT'S DESK . . . The "Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act," H.R. 4, legislation long trumpeted by NSSF, has passed out of the U.S. Senate by a vote of 87-12 without amendment. It now moves to the president's desk for signature. NSSF fully supports repealing the 1099 reporting requirement because it will help protect firearms retailers and gun owners who would otherwise be forced to provide 1099 forms to vendors from whom they buy goods totaling $600 or more annually. NSSF is calling on President Obama, who has expressed his support for repealing this onerous IRS reporting requirement, to sign H.R. 4 into law immediately.

  • MICROSTAMPING THREAT BACK IN NEW YORK . . . Anti-gun legislators from New York City have once again introduced firearms microstamping legislation (A. 1157, Assembly Codes Committee). "This is an extraordinarily dangerous bill," said NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane. "As legislation that would mandate microstamping not only threatens law-abiding gun owners but our industry's ability to supply the nation's law enforcement officers and military with high-quality firearms, we encourage all citizens of New York to contact members of the Codes Committee and their assemblyman today and urge them to oppose A. 1157, firearms microstamping." Learn more about microstamping by viewing the NSSF Microstamping Fact Sheet.

  • UPDATES FROM NICS . . . The FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) has provided NSSF with several updates on issues including new Permanent Resident Cards, the NICS toll-free number to show on caller ID, NICS E-Check digital certificate expiration date, information of keeping FFL contact information up to date and NICS call center representatives seeking status validation. Read all of these updates.

  • SAF SUES BLOOMBERG . . . The Second Amendment Foundation last week filed a lawsuit against New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the City of New York and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman over the city's excessively high handgun permit fee. New York City charges $340 every three years for a license that typically would cost about $10 elsewhere. Joining SAF as plaintiffs in the case, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, are the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association and five city residents. Read Dave Workman's column to learn more.

  • WOLF DEVELOPMENTS . . . The compromise federal budget measure approved by Congress last Friday included a legislative proposal by Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) and Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) that would lift Endangered Species Act protection for gray wolves in Idaho and Montana, "bringing relief," reports the N.Y. Times, "to hunters, ranchers and wildlife officials who have warned that wolves are preying on livestock and causing serious declines in big-game herds." Also last week, a federal judge in Montana rejected a proposed settlement between the federal government and environmental groups that would have delisted gray wolves in Idaho and Montana but left protection in Wyoming and in other states.
