Pawlenty to Attend Shooting Sports Summit
PROSPECTIVE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TO SPEAK JUNE 9 . . . Tim Pawlenty, former two-term governor of Minnesota and prospective 2012 presidential candidate, will deliver a keynote address on June 9 at NSSF's 2011 Shooting Sports Summit. All leaders throughout the industry, state wildlife agencies and the hunting and shooting communities are urged to attend this important event, set for June 7-9 in downtown Louisville, Ky. Pawlenty is a strong supporter of America's right to keep and bear arms and had much success as governor of his home state from 2003 to January 2011. KEMPFFER APPOINTED TO NSSF BOARD OF GOVERNORS . . . NSSF's Board of Governors has appointed Bill Kempffer, president of Deep River Sporting Clays Inc., to serve on its board. Kempffer is the current chairman of NSSF's range division advisory committee and has served on that committee for 10 years. The NSSF Board of Governors is responsible for overseeing the strategy and finances of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry and owner of the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show.

RUGER: NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTIONS NEARLY 25% OF SALES IN 2010 . . . Sturm, Ruger & Co. (NYSE:RGR), which reported fourth-quarter and year-end results Wednesday, said that new product introductions represented $62.3 million, or 24.8 percent, of sales in 2010. Ruger reported total sales of $255.2 million in 2010, compared with sales of $271 million the year before. For the fourth quarter of 2010, sales were $64.1 million, compared to $63.9 million in the fourth quarter a year ago.

WEST COAST ARMORY EARNS FIVE STAR RATING . . . West Coast Armory Indoor Range, located in Bellevue, Wash., is the latest shooting facility to earn a Five Star rating from NSSF. The state-of-the-art range is western Washington's largest indoor shooting facility. In just its first year of operation, its gun club has attracted more than 4,000 members.

POLLS SHOW TOP HUNTING AND SHOOTING BRANDS FOR 2010 . . . Southwick Associates has announced the brands hunters and shooters purchased most frequently in 2010. This list has been compiled from the 41,923 Internet-based surveys completed by hunters and target shooters who volunteered to participate last year in HunterSurvey.com and ShooterSurvey.com polls. See the top brands, according to the surveys.

STEEL CHALLENGE SET FOR AUG. 18-21; USPSA FLORIDA OPEN RESULTS . . . The 2011 Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships will take place August 18-21 in Piru, Calif. This marks the 30th anniversary since the first Steel Challenge and the final year the match will be held in the Golden State. In related news, the U.S. Practical Shooting Association's Florida Open Handgun Championship was held recently in Frostproof, Fla. Read coverage of the event from the Savannah Morning News.

INDUSTRY LEADERS WILL HEAD TO WASHINGTON IN APRIL . . . Officials from NSSF and executives from the Foundation's Voting Member companies will travel to Washington, D.C., April 6-7 to meet with key lawmakers and help advance the industry's federal legislative priorities. Building on the success of past Congressional Fly-Ins, representatives from the industry will meet face-to-face with congressional leaders to discuss matters affecting industry. Participation in the Fly-In is a Voting Member benefit. All Voting Members are strongly encouraged to attend this key government-relations effort. This year's Fly-In will be held at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. NSSF RECOMMENDATIONS PLACED IN AGO REPORT . . . America's Great Outdoors (AGO) is a presidential initiative led by the Departments of Interior and Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality. The AGO was launched last April with a series of listening sessions and culminated with the president recently announcing a final report. Within the report are six NSSF recommendations.

NSSF RESPONSE TO MULTIPLE SALES PROPOSAL IN WASHINGTON POST . . . An NSSF letter to the editor was published today in The Washington Post, responding to an editorial endorsing the ATF proposal to require licensed dealers in four southwestern states to report the sale of multiple long guns to the same individual. The Post, calling the measure "common sense," decried the recent bipartisan majority vote in the House to block the implementation of the proposal. Going a step further, the paper attacked industry's opposition to the mandate as an "irresponsible aversion."

LAWSUIT CHALLENGES IMPORT BARREL BAN . . . The Firearms Import/Export Roundtable (FAIR) Trade Group has filed suit against the federal government, challenging ATF's revised interpretation of the Gun Control Act. Despite any change in language to the existing regulations, ATF has begun enforcing their new interpretation of the GCA affecting the importability of certain firearm barrels. SPORTSMEN URGE EPA TO PROTECT BRISTOL BAY . . . A coalition of more than 360 fishing and hunting organizations and businesses sent a letter last week urging the Obama Administration Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson to use the Clean Water Act to protect Alaska's Bristol Bay from large-scale mining and development. A planned open-pit mine would threaten fish and game habitats and impact international hunting and fishing in the region. Bristol Bay generates $60 million annually and supports more than 800 full- and part-time jobs associated with hunting and fishing. Representatives of the petitioning groups are in Washington, D.C., this week asking legislators and agency members for support. Read the press release and the letter to EPA.
