Get Ready for SHOT Show 2011

BEST IN SHOOTING, HUNTING AND LAW ENFORCEMENT PRODUCTS ON DISPLAY IN LAS VEGAS JAN. 18-22 . . . Having weathered the recession better than many, firearms industry professionals are looking forward to the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show, where they'll get a first look at the new products and services they hope will excite their customers in 2011. While the U.S. economy was mired in recession, sales of firearms and ammunition climbed to record-high levels from late 2008 through early 2010. Since then, sales have remained generally robust. What lies ahead for this $4 billion industry? "We certainly hope to continue bucking the sluggish economy," said President and CEO Steve Sanetti of NSSF, the industry's trade association and owner of the SHOT Show. "People have shown their enthusiasm for shooting and hunting and are still buying at near-record level purchases. Our sports are as popular as ever; USA Today even called hunting 'recession proof.' The buying activity at the SHOT Show will give us a first look as to how the industry will fare in the coming year." More than 50,000 industry professionals will attend the SHOT Show at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas Jan. 18 to 21. On display will be the latest in firearms, ammunition, outdoor clothing, cutlery, optics, law enforcement equipment and related products and services. The largest trade show of its kind in the world, the SHOT Show attracts buyers from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Full Story | SHOT Show Facts and Figures

  • WHITE HOUSE DELAYS MULTIPLE SALES REPORTING REQUIREMENT FOR LONG GUNS . . . An ATF proposal to require federally licensed firearms retailers to report multiple sales of rifles has been placed on hold by the White House amid stiff opposition from the firearms industry and NRA. Specifically, the ATF requirement calls for firearm retailers to report multiple sales, or other dispositions, of two or more semi-automatic rifles that are larger than .22 caliber, capable of accepting a detachable magazine and are purchased by the same individual within five consecutive business days. Though ATF has called this proposal an “emergency” mandate, it was originally pushed by the anti-gun Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) coalition more than a year and a half ago. Full Story

  • DECEMBER NSSF-ADJUSTED NICS FIGURES . . . The FBI has released its National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figures for December 2010. NSSF-adjusted figures (1,133,371) show a 9.9 percent increase over NSSF-adjusted figures from December 2009 (1,031,344). For calendar year 2010, the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 9,436,182 is a decrease of 1 percent over the NSSF-adjusted figure of 9,534,131 in calendar year 2009. In comparison, the unadjusted NICS figure of 14,320,489 for calendar year 2010 is an increase 2.4 percent over the unadjusted NICS figure of 13,984,953 in calendar year 2009. The adjusted NICS data were derived by NSSF by subtracting out NICS purpose-code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky and Utah for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide a more accurate picture of current market conditions. Questions concerning NSSF-adjusted NICS data should be directed to NSSF research at 203-426-1320 or research@nssf.org. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions of firearms sales and transfers on new and used handguns and long guns. NSSF members may access historical monthly NICS reports by logging into the members-only section of www.nssf.org.
