Budweiser to Sponsor SHOT Show Press Room

TWO-YEAR AGREEMENT WITH NSSF . . . Budweiser and the National Shooting Sports Foundation have announced a new two-year agreement that will make Budweiser the official sponsor of the SHOT Show press room. The agreement provides Budweiser with space in the press room to demonstrate its support for hunting and shooting and its Conservationist of the Year Award. The press room serves as the communications hub for the SHOT Show, which attracts more than 1,700 members of the media -- the largest gathering of outdoor press in the world. "Budweiser has long been a good friend to hunters and shooters across America and a champion of wildlife conservation. Budweiser belongs at the SHOT Show," said Chris Dolnack, NSSF's senior vice president and chief marketing officer. "We're thrilled that Budweiser will again be sponsoring the show's press room." News of Note

  • NSSF'S DOUG PAINTER TO RETIRE . . . Doug Painter, former president and CEO and NSSF's longest-serving employee, will retire on March 31. Currently senior advisor and trade liaison, Painter has enjoyed a distinguished career at NSSF covering 37 of the organization's 50 years. Appropriately, one of his most recent tasks was to author "The National Shooting Sports Foundation: A History 1961-2011," a publication marking NSSF's golden anniversary and a chronicle of the organization's achievements, many of which Painter witnessed first-hand. "It's been a great privilege," said Painter, "to play a role in helping to sustain and strengthen America's sporting traditions over the past four decades. Much has changed over the years, but the importance of investing in the future of our outdoor heritage has not. I look forward to continuing to remain active in such efforts." NSSF will recognize Painter for his many contributions to NSSF and industry at the State of the Industry Dinner at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas this month. Full Story

  • GUNS & AMMO LAUNCHES MOBILE GAMING APP, PRESENTED BY NSSF . . . Guns & Ammo has launched Point of Impact, a mobile gaming application developed for iPhone, iPod and the Web. Point of Impact is among one of the first games to utilize a sponsored-model platform. In addition to branding elements, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the "presenting sponsor," blends its core mission of promoting, protecting and preserving hunting and the shooting sports throughout the game by providing informational and educational content. Additionally, all the gaming elements -- firearms, ammunition, gear and ranges -- are modeled from real-life products and places.

  • GREAT RESPONSE TO NSSF FIRST SHOTS PROMOTION . . . NSSF's First Shots Keystone Sporting Arms Initiative is a hit among range operators. So far, 18 new locations will be offering the First Shots program in 2011, and each of them will be able to help youths learn firearm safety thanks to Keystone Sporting Arms' rifle donation. Any range hosting two or more First Shots seminars during 2011 can register for the promotion and become eligible to receive a set of five Crickett rifles to assist their efforts in promoting firearm safety and shooting at their facility. To date, 40 ranges have qualified for the promotion, resulting in more than 100 First Shots seminars scheduled and 200 rifles to be distributed. Ranges: Learn more and register here.

She also serves as a board member on the NRA Women's Leadership and the Women's Outdoor Media Association (WOMA). Before her appearance at the WOMA booth, she will speak about her book, Decontaminate Toxic People Without Using Weapons or Duct Tape, in the press conference room from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Her tips are offered to help improve your communications and deflect conflict at your gun club, range or outdoor industry business.

Government Relations

  • OHIO SUPREME COURT RULES FOR INDUSTRY . . . In a court ruling Wednesday, the Ohio Supreme Court upheld the state's preemption law (which prohibits municipal gun ordinances) by ruling against the City of Cleveland, which had attempted to establish its own restrictive gun-control laws. NSSF filed a legal brief in support of the 2006 state statute that provides that only federal or state law may regulate firearms. NSSF joined the Ohio Attorney General in arguing that the statute clearly expressed the General Assembly's intent to provide uniform statewide firearms laws and prevent municipalities from creating a patchwork of different firearms-related ordinances across Ohio.

  • MICROSTAMPING LEGISLATION INTRODUCED IN NEW YORK STATE . . . Once again, politicians in Albany are more concerned about legislating law-abiding gun owners and impacting federally licensed firearms retailers than focusing on the budget problems facing the state. State Sen. Jose Peralta (D) has pre-filed legislation (SB 675) that would require all new semiautomatic pistols sold after Jan. 1, 2013, to be microstamp-ready. Microstamping is a patented, sole-sourced concept that independent studies have found to be flawed and easily defeated by criminals. NSSF will continue to monitor the situation in New York and will provide updates.

  • MORE ON ATF MULTIPLE SALES REPORTING . . . An editorial in The Washington Post last week discussed the recent decision by ATF to require federally licensed firearms retailers along the Southwest border to report multiple sales, or other dispositions, of most semi-automatic rifles. Though the Post supports this ill-advised proposal, it did acknowledge the legitimacy surrounding one of industry's objections. Read more from the NSSF Blog.

  • ATF ISSUES RULINGS AFFECTING MANUFACTURERS . . . ATF has issued a ruling (ATF Rul. 2010-10) to end the need of interim processors (a/k/a "secondary manufacturers") to obtain a manufacturing license and/or marking variances. Under this new ruling, dealers (Type 1 FFLs) will be able to blue, heat treat, polish, etc., firearms in the process of being manufactured as long as they have a contract with the primary manufacturer, receive the firearms (receivers/frames) properly marked from the manufacturer and return them directly to the manufacturer. ATF has also issued Ruling 2010-8, which will allow manufacturers to consolidate their records. Previously, ATF required both a record of manufacturing and of disposition (27 CFR 478.123). Complying with these redundant measures placed an unnecessary burden on manufacturers. Now, a single record can be maintained as long as the conditions set forth are met. The agency also recently issued another ruling, ATF Ruling 2010-9. These rulings are welcomed by industry and represent a clear outgrowth of NSSF's ongoing dialogue with ATF.
