GRANT SUPPORTS SHOOTING PROGRAMS . . . For the fourth consecutive year, the National Shooting Sports Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to Boy Scouts of America in support of year-round target shooting initiatives at Scouting councils nationwide. The BSA Shooting Sports Grant program provides assistance to councils that have shooting programs or want to develop one. "This is a tremendous initiative that reaches the grassroots level of Scouting and that will make a positive impact on more than 100 councils by the end of this year," said Frank Reigelman, BSA’s director of outdoor programs. "The ongoing support of NSSF has helped keep the future of the shooting sports bright in the Boy Scouts of America." Read the NSSF Press Release.

Legislative & Politics

  • NSSF URGES 'YES' VOTE TO THWART HUMANE SOCIETY . . . NSSF has alerted Arizonans to cast a "Yes" vote on Proposition 109, an amendment that will guarantee residents the right to hunt and fish and which is being opposed by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). This extremist anti-hunting group, which has vowed to end hunting "state by state," last Friday called for an end to bear hunting in New Jersey, ignoring that the New Jersey Fish and Game Council authorized the hunt to protect the public's safety. Prop 109 is specifically written to pre-empt anti-hunting groups from attempting to restrict the right of Arizonans to hunt and fish.

  • TENNESSEE CONSTITUTION MAY INCLUDE RIGHT TO HUNT AND FISH . . . An amendment that would protect Tennesseeans' right to hunt and fish is on the ballot Nov. 2 and must be approved by a majority of persons voting in the gubernatorial race in order to pass. Voters who skip the issue will be giving it a "no" vote, so approval is not guaranteed, Knoxnews.com reports. The right-to-hunt-and-fish question will appear on the ballot just beneath the governor's race. Read the full story.

  • Ralph Karanian, COO of Kimber
and Senator Eric Adams, discuss the firearms
manufacturing process used at Yonkers facility

  • NEW YORK STATE SENATOR VISITS KIMBER MANUFACTURING . . . State Senator Eric Adams (D-NY) visited the Kimber manufacturing facilities in Yonkers, New York last Wednesday, to get a first-hand look at the positive economic impact this manufacturer is having on the Empire State. Sen. Adams received a tour of the newly expanded operation and was able to meet many of the workers that make up Kimber. Discussing his visit, Sen. Adams said, "Seeing first-hand the investment that Kimber is making in the local community and meeting some of their over 300 skilled employees was a great experience. I look forward to many more visits to come." View the latest firearms industry economic impact data.

News of Note

  • MICHIGAN ONLINE MAPPING FOR HUNTERS . . . No matter where hunters are in the Wolverine State, they can find public land on which to hunt thanks to a new interactive mapping tool developed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment. The maps provide a look at vegetation types, topography, and recreational facilities such as campgrounds, trails and boat launches, according to an Associated Press story. Aerial photography and street maps are included as well. Mi-HUNT was developed with funding assistance from an NSSF Hunting Heritage Partnership grant.

  • AMMO MAKERS ADD JOBS . . . Two ammunition manufacturers in Lewiston, Idaho, plan to add "significant numbers of workers" this year and next, reports the Journal of Business. ATK expects to add about 100 jobs by the end of 2010, and Extreme Bullet plans to expand its facility and add about 100 jobs over the next few years. ATK's employee ranks will grow to approximatley 1,200 workers by the end of this year. Extreme Bullets currently employs 44 people. Read the full story.

  • VORTEX OPTICS BECOMES FIRST SHOTS SPONSOR . . . Vortex Optics has joined the growing list of industry companies that generously support First Shots, the NSSF program that helps shooting ranges nationwide provide introductory seminars in handgun, rifle and shotgun. Vortex has been in the optics business since 1986 and is one of the few family-owned and operated U.S. companies in the industry. "Introducing and recruiting new participants to the shooting sports in a safe, positive and fun format is something Vortex Optics believes in," said company president Dan Hamilton. "Supporting the NSSF First Shots program simply makes sense, and we are proud and excited to be working with them." Read NSSF's press release.

  • FAMILIES SEEK FIREARM EDUCATION . . . According to a Chieftain.com report, local gun experts are saying women and family members account for recent increases in concealed weapons permits. Brad Emerson, co-owner of Arctic Shooting Supply said, "Fifty percent of our classes are now women. Before, 80 to 90 percent of the classes were men. Mothers and daughters take the class... I've seen people get a permit and then educate their kids about it because there's going to be a firearm in the house." Read the full story.
