A Day to Honor America's Hunters

NHF DAY CELEBRATED NATIONWIDE . . . Hunters and anglers are America's original conservationists. To date, they've contributed some $8 billion for wildlife conservation. Saturday was a day to recognize their contributions. Across the country this weekend Americans celebrated National Hunting and Fishing Day by attending events, by teaching others about the efforts of hunters and anglers or simply by enjoying the outdoor traditions they love with the ones they love. In Louisiana, for example, more than 1,100 children attended activities at a state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries education center and shooting range. The media also helped educate the general public about sportsmen's efforts in newspapers nationwide. The New York Times featured several stories in this weekend's editions about the tradition of hunting in America. The president issued an official proclamation, saying, "Our ability to enjoy our land and wildlife today is a tribute to the character of conservationists who have come before us. On National Hunting and Fishing Day, we celebrate the time-honored traditions of hunting and fishing, as well as the preservation of America's vast natural resources, as we seek to protect them for centuries to come." Legal, Legislative & Regulatory

  • NRA JOINS NSSF IN SUPPORTING MICROSTAMPING STUDY BILL . . . The National Rifle Association has announced its support for NSSF-backed legislation to further study the flawed concept of firearms microstamping. The Firearms Microstamping Evaluation and Study Act (H.R. 5667) directs the U.S. Attorney General to work with the National Academy of Sciences to conduct a comprehensive study of firearms microstamping. Support for this commonsense bipartisan bill is rooted in ensuring that adequate research of microstamping is completed prior to states mandating the flawed concept through the legislative process. The American Bar Association's House of Delegates has adopted a microstamping resolution submitted by its own Standing Committee on Gun Violence, whose members include Dennis Henigan of the Brady Campaign. • CONGRESSMAN INTRODUCES BILL TO REMOVE AMMO EXEMPTION FROM TSCA . . . Following a strong grassroots campaign led by NSSF, the Environmental Protection Agency last month denied a petition to ban the production and distribution of traditional ammunition under the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) of 1976. The EPA was forced to deny the petition based on language in the TSCA that specifically exempts ammunition from being considered a "chemical substance." A well-established anti-gun politician is attempting to change or remove that exemption. Read more.
