NSSF PROVIDES LINKS TO NEWS, POLLS, REGISTRATION INFO AND MORE . . . The 2010 elections are right around the corner. This year it's more critical than ever that hunters, shooters and gun owners make their votes count at the polls. News of Note

  • FIREARMS RETAILERS FINDING STRENGTH IN NUMBERS . . . There is strength in numbers -- a fact that more and more firearms retailers across the country are realizing as they confront challenges on state and local levels. Retailers in nine states so far have banded together to form state retailer associations with the help of NSSF, a tactic that has not only helped unify these businesses, but is also giving them a powerful voice. One of those, Massachusetts, is back in a big way and getting stronger. The group recently filed for and received its nonprofit status and met last week to elect its board of directors, made up of gun-store owners from throughout the state. With a membership of 43 firearms retailers and counting, the Massachusetts Association of Firearms Retailers (MAFR) is giving those businesses a unified voice, something certainly needed in a state known for its anti-gun sentiment and ever-changing gun laws. • NSSF RESEARCH HITS NATIONAL NEWSWIRES, USA TODAY . . . One key benefit NSSF provides to its members is its research. Another benefit is when NSSF's research hits the national newswires spotlighting hunting and the shooting sports in a favorable manner. That was the case this morning, when a news story, titled "Even during recession, hunting remains bulletproof industry," was featured on the Money page of USA Today. The story was run in newspapers across the country after it hit the Gannett newswires. "This placement emphasizing the economic impact of hunting illustrates that hunting works for America," said Chris Dolnack, NSSF senior vice president. The article focused on the fact that even during tough economic times hunting license sales rose in key states and purchases of hunting-related equipment remained high. • NSSF's ASSOCIATION OF SHOOTING RANGES AT SKEET CHAMPIONSHIPS . . . NSSF's Association of Shooting Ranges will have a booth at the upcoming World Skeet Championships in San Antonio Oct. 1-3. • SMALL COMPANY, BIG GROWTH . . . The company's co-founders are all under age 30 and have been successful in business outside the firearms and ammunition industry. Said co-founder Brian Crane, "This industry is changing, and we want to be the tip of the spear."

  • GALS WITH GUNS . . . DIVA WOW (DIVA-Women Oudoors Worldwide), a Texas-based, 1,500-member women's outdoor organization, is getting major publicity thanks to an Associated Press story that not only has been printed in newspapers across the country but has gotten the attention of Fox News and CBS News, says founder Judy Rhodes. The group offers seminars in hunting, shooting, dog training, fishing and archery, and a clinic on modern sporting rifles is planned as well. "We help women find their niche in the outdoors," says Rhodes. Learn more at divawow.org.

  • TV NEWS HELPS PROMOTE PROJECT CHILDSAFE MESSAGE . . . A reminder to "store guns safely" comes from this KSBW news video, which while not mentioning that NSSF developed Project ChildSafe nevertheless does a good job of promoting the program's message that safely storing firearms in the home can help prevent firearm accidents involving children and save lives. More than 35 million gun lock safety kits have been distributed by Project ChildSafe through funding from U.S. Department of Justice grants and additional funding from the firearms industry. Any law enforcement department is entitled to receive Project ChildSafe firearm safety kits that include a gun locking device. The program's website is www.projectchildsafe.org.

  • SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE HOLDS HEARING RELATED TO U.S. V. STEVENS . . . The Senate Judiciary Committee last week held a hearing entitled "Prohibiting Obscene Animal Crush Videos in the Wake of United States v. Stevens." This hearing was an outgrowth of the U.S. v. Stevens case, in which NSSF submitted an amicus brief and sounded the alarm about the case to the conservation world and outdoor media. The Supreme Court's decision was based chiefly on the argument advanced by NSSF, other conservation groups and outdoor media that the statute at issue would criminalize depictions of hunting and the possession/sale of the same by dealers.
