Registration Open for 2011 SHOT Show

VIDEO: INVITATION TO INDUSTRY'S MAIN EVENT . . . Attendee registration for the 2011 SHOT Show is now open at www.shotshow.org. The show is just 19 weeks from today. In a short video invitation, National Shooting Sports Foundation Chairman Bob Scott encourages all buyers and retailers to sharpen their competitive edge by attending the 2011 show in Las Vegas. "Our new SHOT Show logo is just the beginning of what's new and changed at this year's SHOT Show," said Scott. Watch the video and register today for NSSF's 2011 SHOT Show.

  • NEW REQUIREMENTS WILL HELP EXHIBITORS BETTER INDENTIFY 'BUYERS' . . . Exhibitors at the 2011 SHOT Show will have a much easier time identifying true "buyers" thanks to changes to the attendee-registration process. This change is based on feedback from exhibitors, who stated that the traditional red attendee badges used at the show do not clearly identify who from an organization is the decision-maker in buying. News of Note

  • 'TAKE ME HUNTING, TAKE ME SHOOTING' CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED . . . Task Force 20-20, the committee formed at the NSSF Shooting Sports Summit to evaluate opportunities to grow hunting and the shooting sports, will begin testing its first initiative -- a coordinated marketing effort in selected states designed to reactivate lapsed hunters and shooters. The Task Force 20-20 steering committee has approved piloting the "Take Me Hunting/Take Me Shooting" campaign this summer and fall. NSSF will fund the effort out of a $500,000 overall commitment to support several Task Force 20-20 plans to aggressively promote hunting and shooting. Read more.

  • LIPSEY JOINS NSSF BOARD OF GOVERNORS . . . NSSF is pleased to announce Richard Lipsey as the newest addition to NSSF's Board of Governors. Lipsey currently serves as chairman of Lipsey's Inc., one of the nation's leading firearms distributors.

  • A LOOK AT AUGUST NSSF-ADJUSTED NICS FIGURES . . . The FBI has released its National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figures for August 2010. NSSF-adjusted figures (718,971) show a 4.6 percent increase over August of last year (687,252). The adjusted NICS data were derived by NSSF by subtracting out NICS purpose-code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky and Utah for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases. Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the adjusted NICS data provide a more accurate picture of current market conditions. Questions concerning NSSF-adjusted NICS data should be directed to NSSF's research department at 203-426-1320 or research@nssf.org. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions of firearms sales and transfers on new and used handguns and long guns. Click here to find additional information on NICS and to view complete monthly NICS reports.

  • AIMPOINT PLEDGES SUPPORT TO FIRST SHOTS PROGRAM . . . As First Shots attendees step to the firing line to learn about handguns and modern sporting rifles, they'll find sighting-in a simple process thanks to red-dot optics company Aimpoint and its generous support of the program. NSSF has announced the addition of Aimpoint to the growing list of industry supporters of First Shots, the NSSF-developed program that introduces newcomers to target shooting.

  • TAX-FREE WEEKEND A BOON FOR LOUISIANA FIREARMS RETAILERS . . . Louisiana retailers reported a boost in sales over the weekend due to the state's Second Amendment Weekend Sales Tax Holiday, held Friday to Sunday. Shoppers were able to purchase firearms, ammunition, hunting knives and other eligible items tax free.

Legal & Legislative

  • NSSF SUPPORTS ATF MODERNIZATION ACT . . . Legislation, "The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Reform and Firearms Modernization Act of 2009" (S. 941), strikes a fair balance between providing ATF with additional regulatory options to encourage even greater compliance short of revocation while at the same time affording licensees more rights and due process in the regulatory scheme. The bi-partisan bill was introduced by Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.). It would allow ATF new powers to issue fines and suspend licenses of federal firearms licensees (as opposed to current regulations which only allow for license revocation). The legislation would also allow ATF to distinguish between more serious violations and "benign/administrative" violations. Furthermore, the legislation would create an appeals process, whereby FFLs would have cases heard before a neutral administrative law judge, rather than an ATF official. NSSF is supportive of this bill as it will help protect the rights of FFLs while giving ATF more flexibility in how they exercise their regulatory authority to encourage enhanced compliance. Companion legislation in the House was introduced by Rep. Steve King (R- Iowa) and Zack Space (D-Ohio). This legislation has 240 co-sponsors in the House and 36 co-sponsors in the Senate. Send a letter of support to Congress.

  • NSSF BEGINS PLANNING FOR 2011 CONGRESSIONAL FLY-IN . . . The NSSF Government Affairs team has begun planning for the 2011 Congressional Fly-In, tentatively scheduled for April 6-7. Preparations for the Fly-In follow one of the industry's most successful legislative years in history -- success largely attributable to the work undertaken during our 2010 Capitol Hill meetings. • OBAMA ADMINISTRATION DENIES IMPORTATION, SALE OF FIREARMS . . . After previously approving the lawful importation of nearly one million antique American made M1 rifles from South Korea to the United States, the Obama administration suddenly revoked the authorization thereby denying the importation of these rifles. The administration's justification for banning the import of these firearms relies upon the same false and disproven arguments used to justify the "assault weapons" ban back in 1994 and reflects current calls by the anti-Second Amendment crowd to restore and expand the ban.

  • NYPD EYES CHANGES TO FIREARM PERMIT APPLICATION PROCESS . . . The New York City Police Department intends to adopt amendments to its rules pertaining to handgun licenses, rifle/shotgun permits and organizations possessing rifles and shotguns. Through the proposed amendments, the police department is claiming to be streamlining the application process by removing some notary requirements, but it is seeking broader unconstitutional power to deny law-abiding New Yorkers their Second Amendment rights. • COURT FINDS NO JURISDICTION OVER FOREIGN FIREARMS MANUFACTURER . . . The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has affirmed the dismissal of a products liability lawsuit for "lack of personal jurisdiction" over the affiliate of a now defunct Italian firearms manufacturer. Read more.

  • 10-YEAR SENTENCE FOR VIRGINIA GUN SHOP THEFT GETAWAY DRIVER . . . A getaway driver involved in a Virginia Beach gun shop theft was sentenced in Norfolk, Va., federal court to 10 years in prison for his role in a nighttime theft of 27 firearms. The theft occurred at the Armory Gun Shop in Virginia Beach.

2010 Elections

  • CHUCK IS BACK! . . . Action hero Chuck Norris is riding to the rescue of the Second Amendment with a new ad encouraging gun owners, hunters and shooters to register to vote. The National Rifle Association's Freedom Action Foundation (NRA-FAF) is featuring Chuck Norris in a new series of advertisements for its "Trigger the Vote" voter registration campaign. "Tough Like Chuck," the first in the new series of ads can be viewed here. NSSF encourages industry members to promote the campaign to help ensure that all of our customers who are eligible to vote are registered. In most states, the deadline to register to vote is one month before the general election.

  • MISSOURI REP. ROY BLUNT RECEIVES NRA ENDORSEMENT . . . Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) has received the National Rifle Association's endorsement in his bid to replace Kit Bond in the U.S. Senate. Blunt is a former Missouri governor and an NRA board member. Read more.

  • TENNESSEE CANDIDATES COMPETE FOR GUN OWNERS' SUPPORT . . . Even as pro-gun groups in Tennessee concentrate on legislative races, the candidates for governor are continuing to jockey for support of sportsmen and gun owners. Read more about how Republican Bill Haslam and Democrat Mike McWherter have made gun rights a cornerstone of both of their campaigns.
