About Shooting and Our Industry

MINNEAPOLIS RANGES OFFER FREE INTRO TO SHOOTING; CAMPAIGN EDUCATES PUBLIC ON INDUSTRY EFFORTS . . . As it has over the past year in the Washington, D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles markets, the National Shooting Sports Foundation is teaming up with Minneapolis/St. Paul-area shooting ranges this week to introduce local residents to the shooting sports and firearm safety. Several First Shots seminars will be held this week at three area ranges. To coincide with the seminars, NSSF will be running a weeklong campaign in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press to remind residents about what the firearms industry is doing to promote safe and responsible ownership and storage. The ad says, "80 million firearms owners across America are committed to firearms safety -- and so are we. That's why we've been an advocate for firearms safety, education, lawful ownership and responsible enjoyment of hunting and the shooting sports for over 50 years." NSSF has run similar notices in the Washington, D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles markets. Last year, 6,000 people were introduced to the enjoyment of handgun and long-gun shooting at 259 First Shots seminars across the country. Learn more about First Shots and how to hold a seminar at your range.

  • ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SHOT SHOW . . . Since the SHOT Show was held in January, NSSF has received feedback in all forms, including social media, a live chat held last month and surveys sent to all of the show's exhibitors and attendees. Over the next few weeks, NSSF will be addressing the many questions we've received and posting the answers on the SHOT Show Blog. Take a look at the first batch.

  • ATK REALIGNS BUSINESS STRUCTURE, ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP TEAM . . . Alliant Techsystems (NYSE:ATK) will realign its business structure, effective April 1, into four operating groups: Aerospace Systems, Armament Systems, Missile Products and Security and Sporting. Ron Johnson, who led the commercial products business of Armament Systems, will lead the newly formed Security and Sporting group. Karen Davies, who led the Small Caliber Systems business of Armament Systems, will lead the Armament Systems group. Read more about all appointments to ATK's new leadership team.

  • SMITH & WESSON REPORTS THIRD-QUARTER RESULTS . . . Sales in Smith & Wesson's (NASDAQ:SWHC) firearms division were down 11 percent in the third quarter compared to the same period the previous year. Overall revenue at Smith & Wesson increased 6.8 percent during the quarter due to ongoing growth in the company's perimeter security business Universal Safety Response. CFO William F. Spengler said the company expects firearm sales in the fourth quarter to reflect "more stable levels of demand and production versus the spike that we experienced in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009." • GUN STORE OWNERS EXPECT SALES SURGE IF CHICAGO BAN FALLS . . . Crain's Chicago Business interviewed Windy City-area firearms retailers on what it could mean for their businesses if the Supreme Court strikes down Chicago's 28-year-old handgun ban. Ending the city's ban would "open up business to thousands and thousands of households, and that could mean thousands and thousands in sales," says Fred Lutger, owner of Freddie Bear Sports, the outdoor-sports store he's operated in south suburban Tinley Park for 30 years. Legal & Legislative

  • NEW JERSEY MICROSTAMPING BILL INTRODUCED . . . Firearms microstamping has been introduced in the New Jersey Senate. NSSF will lead the fight to oppose this legislation to mandate this flawed technology. "Microstamping legislation not only threatens law-abiding gun owners but directly interferes with our industry's ability to supply law-enforcement officers and the military with high-quality firearms," said NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane. The bill has been assigned to the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee, but has not yet been scheduled for a hearing. NSSF will continue to monitor the situation and will provide future updates.

  • UTAH HOUSE APPROVES BROWNING HOLIDAY . . . The governor's signature is the only hurdle remaining for a holiday memorializing the late Utah firearms inventor John M. Browning, The Salt Lake Tribune reports. The Utah House voted 64-0 Wednesday to commemorate the Utah-born inventor on Jan. 24, 2011, the opening day of next year's legislative session. It will come 100 years after Browning invented the M1911 pistol, which became the official sidearm for the U.S. military.

  • CHICAGO MAYOR CALLS FOR NEW STATE LAWS ON GUNS . . . Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, undaunted by the anticipated Supreme Court decision striking down Chicago's failed handgun ban law, is calling for more laws to restrict the lawful commerce in firearms, such as banning modern sporting rifles, requiring federally licensed firearms dealers also be licensed by the state and to limit the number of handguns a law-abiding customer can purchase in a given month. Fortunately, these rehashed proposals have failed in previous legislative sessions.

  • HOW THE HIGH COURT COULD CHANGE IF STEVENS RETIRES . . . Speculation is growing that Justice John Paul Stevens, the U.S. Supreme Court's longest-serving member, will step down at the end of the current term in June. National Public Radio spoke with New Yorker legal correspondent Jeffrey Toobin to discuss who is likely to replace Stevens -- and how the court will rule on the future of gun-control laws. Toobin profiles Stevens, the court's "liberal leader," in the March 22 issue of The New Yorker.

Read a complete wrap-up from the NCAA Rifle Championships.

American shotgunners garnered at least one medal in all five events -- women's trap, men's trap, double trap, women's skeet, and men's skeet -- the most individual medals won by an American team at a World Cup in recent memory.

  • REVOLVER COMPETITIONS TO BEGIN MARCH 20 . . . The revolver competition season will begin March 20 and 21 when the Southern Shooting Center in Thibodaux, La., hosts the Southern Regional Revolver Championship. The International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts (ICORE) announced that Smith & Wesson will sponsor six regional competitions this year as well as the International Revolver Championships, set for June 4-6 at the Hogue Action Pistol Range in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

  • YOUTH SHOOTING PROGRAM REACHES MILESTONE . . . Since 1978, John Kauza has been teaching Boy Scouts in New Jersey the basics shooting and offering NSSF's Junior USA Shooting Team rifle- and shotgun-shooting patches to young marksmen who complete his program. The program recently graduated its 5,000th rifleman, 14-year-old Matt Jaszyn of Whitehouse Station, N.J.. To commemorate this milestone, Anthony Imperato, president of Henry Repeating Rifles, donated a Presentation Model of its renowned "Golden Boy" rifle inscribed with Matt's name, date of achievement and Troop number.

  • AS NEW JERSEY BEAR POPULATION SOARS, OFFICIALS AGAIN CALL FOR HUNT . . . Wildlife officials report that New Jersey's black bear population -- and bear-related complaints -- have soared recently. The Star-Ledger reports that there were 3,006 bear-related calls logged to wildlife officials in 2009, up more than 1,500 from just two years ago. The state's bear population has surged to nearly 3,500, which has caused the state Fish and Game Council to adopt a management policy recommending a six-day hunt in December. If approved, the hunt would be the state's first since 2005.

  • HUNTING HERITAGE CONFERENCE A SUCCESS IN WISCONSIN . . . Department of Natural Resources Secretary Matt Frank congratulated and thanked the participants of Wisconsin's first Hunting Heritage Conference who met recently to share ideas about broadening participation in the state's hunting heritage. The conference was funded by a grant from the National Shooting Sports Foundation's Hunting Heritage Partnership. Read more about the conference.

  • DU REACHES CONSERVATION MILESTONE IN SOUTH ATLANTIC . . . Ducks Unlimited achieved another milestone by conserving its 250,000th acre in the South Atlantic Flyway. DU has completed 185 wetland restoration and enhancement projects across the four states totaling over 151,000 acres, with the majority of these projects occurring on public lands. DU has also protected an additional 128,000 acres of private lands through our conservation easement program.
