14. How many people reload their shotgun shells?
Our 2005 Hunting Participation & Attitude Survey contains a series of detailed questions regarding reloading. Below are some summary points from the survey. This report is updated every 5 years (the full copy is available for purchase).

28% of respondents reload their own ammunition. This figure declined significantly as 41% of respondents reloaded their own ammunition in 2000.

Common reasons for reloading their own ammunition include that reloaded ammo is cheaper and more accurate and that doing so is fun or is a hobby. The trend is for a lower percentage to say that reloading is cheaper and higher percentage to say that reloaded ammunition is more accurate / fun.

A slight majority of those who reload their own ammo (52%) reload shotshells; the trend regarding shotshells is that a lower percentage are reloading shotshells than in previous studies.

The mean number of shotshells reloaded by those who reload shotshells was 2,487 annually. The mean number of centerfire rifle cartridges reloaded was 1,042.
