01. How much money is generated yearly from the sale of firearms & ammunition?
The only true indicator that is readily available is the amount of excise taxes collected on the sale of firearms (long guns and handguns) and ammunition. Considering the excise taxes are paid by the manufacturers - they are a good indication of the sales volume in any given quarter. When you multiply back based on the assumption that long guns and ammo are taxed at 11% and handguns at 10% we can estimated the total sales.
In 2005: (most current complete year)
(Long Guns)
$105,637,000 collected in excise taxes. ($105,637,000/ .11)
= $960.3 million for long guns.
(Ammunition)
$71,312,000 collected in excise taxes. ($71,312,000/.11)
= $648.3 million for ammunition.
(Handguns)
$47,340,000 collected in excise taxes. ($47,340,000/.10)
= $473.4 million for handguns
Total industry estimation for 2005: $2.1 billion.
Using the same calculation above - you can substitute any year or quarter
excise taxes collected.
