Matt Buhler

Matt Buhler

Matt Buhler was born and raised in Wyoming and grew up hunting and fishing. He earned a Bachelor of Science in 1993 from the University of Wyoming in fish and wildlife biology and management. He then earned his Master of Science degree with the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit at the University of Wyoming in 1998. He has worked with a variety of species ranging from neotropical migrant birds to Rocky Mountain elk.

In 1998, he began working for the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit conducting research on black-tailed prairie dogs and mule deer. He then accepted a position with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife as the state habitat and access coordinator, where he worked until 2001. He returned to Wyoming to work for the state game and fish agency as the state access coordinator, where he continues to work.

His positions with Oregon and Wyoming have primarily dealt with providing public hunting and fishing access onto private and landlocked public lands. In Oregon, habitat improvement was performed on private lands in return for public access. Wyoming's program provides easement payments, law enforcement and the management of sportspersons in return for public access. During the 2007 hunting seasons, the Private Lands Pubic Wildlife Access Program, which Matt supervises, provided hunting access to around 2.9 million private and landlocked public acres.
